English Academic Program

Exploring High School Options? There's Something New to Consider.

As you and your child begin planning for high school, this is a great time to explore options and think about what matters most for their future.

Beginning in September 2027, École J.H. Picard Catholic High School will offer a new English academic program on Edmonton’s south side, alongside its established French Immersion program.

A New Option on Edmonton's South Side

The English academic program brings together like-minded peers in a focused, university preparatory environment defined by high expectations and academic excellence.

It will support students who are motivated to excel and interested in a rigorous learning pathway, including opportunities to pursue Advanced Placement (AP) courses.

The program will operate alongside French Immersion as part of a dual-track model, similar to Archbishop MacDonald Catholic High School.

Entrance requirements will apply

Students wishing to apply must have a minimum grade of 75% in each of the following Grade 9 subjects:

  • Religious Studies
  • English Language Arts
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Students MUST ALSO have an average of 80% or higher in the 4 core subjects of English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

J.H. Picard will not offer -2 level courses at the Grade 10 level for students in the English academic program.

Program Timelines

The English academic program will be phased in to ensure quality implementation:

  • 2027–2028: Grade 10
  • 2028–2029: Grades 10 and 11
  • 2029–2030: Grades 10, 11, and 12

French Immersion at J.H. Picard

French Immersion programming at J.H. Picard will continue, with a strong focus on the school’s bilingual identity, culture, and traditions.

Students in French Immersion will:

  • Continue in the existing program
  • Have opportunities to take advanced-level courses and options in English
  • Experience no changes to their learning pathway

Entrance requirements will apply only to the English academic program and will not affect French Immersion students.

Both programs will run side by side, offering clear and separate learning pathways.

Next Steps

During the 2026–2027 school year, J.H. Picard will continue to develop the English academic program. More information about the application process, course offerings, and program details will be shared as it becomes available.

The school will also connect with families and students by visiting south side junior high schools and hosting an open house on January 28, 2027.

Registration opens February 2027.
